DownWool Mat Trekking, a two-layer all-season sleeping mat for more comfort, stability and safety

The Grüezi bag® DownWool Mat Trekking is a comfortable, mummy-shaped, all-season sleeping mat for trekking, mountaineering, camping, rooftop tents, vans, and travel . Its unique feature is its two-layer construction with two separate, insulated air layers: slightly firmer on the bottom for a stable base, and pleasantly soft on top for sinking in.

The bottom layer is inflated slightly more, providing stability and distance from the ground. The top layer is intentionally kept softer, allowing the shoulders and hips to sink in comfortably and the body to lie more securely on the mat. This prevents you from rolling or sliding off the mat as easily during the night as you would on a very firmly inflated surface.

At the same time, the firmer lower layer helps prevent the shoulders and hips from sinking too quickly into the ground, despite the softer top layer. Thus, the DownWool Mat Trekking combines soft sleeping comfort with a stable base.

For added safety on your trip, the two air layers are separate and each has its own valve. Should one layer be damaged and lose air, the other remains usable. This is a valuable additional reserve, especially on multi-day trekking and mountaineering tours.

The V-chamber construction with raised side chambers provides additional support for a stable lying position and helps to reduce lateral slippage during the night.

For insulation, the mat combines a heat-reflective foil with a firmly integrated DownWool® fleece made of 70% down and 30% wool. With a height of 8 cm and an R-value of 3,9, it offers excellent insulation and a comfortable distance from the cold ground.

In short: stable on the bottom, soft on top. This allows the body to sink in comfortably, providing more stability and preventing it from slipping off the mat so easily at night, while the second layer of air offers additional security on the go.

Why you'll love the DownWool Mat Trekking

  • Less slippage: The softer top layer allows the body to sink in comfortably and, together with the V-chamber construction and the raised side chambers, ensures a more stable lying position.
  • Stable on the bottom, soft on top: The lower air layer can be inflated more firmly, the upper layer more softly, for a stable base and comfortable lying position.
  • Less prone to sagging: While the shoulder and hip sink comfortably into the upper layer, the firmer lower layer keeps the body at a distance from the ground.
  • Additional safety reserve: Two separate air layers with their own valves. If one layer loses air, the second remains usable.
  • Comfortable for side sleepers: The 8 cm mat height and the softly adjustable top layer offer space for the shoulders and hips to sink in.
  • High insulation: R-value 3,9 for use in cooler temperatures.
  • DownWool® fleece plus reflective film: A firmly integrated fleece made of 70% down and 30% wool complements the heat-reflective foil.
  • Compactly stowable: 4,6 liter packing volume.

Two air positions, the difference when lying down

With the DownWool Mat Trekking, both air layers can be inflated independently. This allows you to adjust the sleeping comfort to your liking.

The bottom layer is inflated slightly more firmly. It forms a stable base and keeps the body away from the ground.

The top layer can be adjusted to be softer. Shoulders and hips sink in comfortably, and the body lies more stably in the mat, so you're less likely to roll to the side or slide off during the night.

This creates a pleasantly soft lying sensation without having to forgo a stable base.

Another advantage of the two separate air layers is the additional safety: Should one layer be damaged en route, the second remains available.

FEATURES

  • Two separately inflatable air layers: Each layer has its own valve and can be adjusted independently.
  • Individually adjustable reclining comfort: The lower layer is firmer for stability, the upper layer is softer for comfortable sinking.
  • More stable lying position: The softer top layer, V-chamber construction and raised side chambers help to reduce lateral slippage.
  • Additional safety reserve: If one layer loses air, the second layer remains usable.
  • 8 cm mat height: Provides a comfortable distance from the ground and plenty of room to sink in.
  • DownWool® insulation: A firmly integrated DownWool® fleece made of 70% down and 30% wool complements the insulating construction.
  • Heat-reflecting foil: It provides insulation against the cold surface.
  • Mummy shape: Reduces material and packing volume while offering ample space in the shoulder area.
  • Twister pump sack: The included “Twister pump sack” serves both for easy filling of the mat and as a compression pack sack for space-saving storage.
  • Repair kit included: For minor damage on the go.

WHAT IS DOWNWOOL® IN THE SLEEPING MAT?

  • DownWool® combines down and wool in a lightweight insulating layer. In the DownWool Mat Trekking, the blend is used as a permanently integrated 100 g/m² fleece, complementing the air chambers and the heat-reflective foil.
  • The DownWool® fleece is firmly integrated into the mat construction and ensures a consistently even heat output, without any cold bridges.
  • The result is a combined insulation of air chambers, DownWool® fleece and heat-reflecting film, which together contribute to an R-value of 3,9.

WHAT DOES THE R-VALUE MEAN?

  • The R-value describes the thermal resistance of an insulating mat. The higher the value, the more the mat reduces heat loss to the cold surface.
  • The DownWool Mat Trekking achieves an R-value of 3,9 and is recommended for use down to approximately -10 °C. Actual comfort also depends on sleeping bag, clothing, ground surface, humidity, and individual sensitivity to cold.

TIPS/NOTES

inflation

  • Inflate the mat exclusively using the supplied pump pack sack or a suitable air pump.
  • Do not inflate with your mouth to minimize moisture entering the mat structure.
  • Do not use compressed air from compressors or cartridges.
  • For a comfortable basic setting, Grüezi bag® recommends approximately 3 pump sack fillings for the lower layer and 2 pump sack fillings for the upper layer.
  • Important: Do not inflate the bottom layer too firmly at first. As the top layer is inflated, the shape of the mat changes, which automatically makes the bottom layer firmer.
  • Then fine-tune the air pressure of both layers according to personal preference: slightly firmer at the bottom for stability, slightly softer at the top for comfortable sinking and a more stable lying position.

Outdoor

  • A sturdy base protects the mat from sharp and pointed objects.
  • The maximum permissible load is 120 kg.
  • Avoid high temperatures and hot surfaces.
  • Strong sunlight can cause the air inside the mat to expand. In this case, release some air to prevent overpressure in the chambers.
  • Do not expose the mat to extreme weather conditions for extended periods.

Isolation

The R-value of 3,9 is achieved through the two-layer construction (preventing thermal bridges) and the insulation. In addition to a heat-reflective foil, a DownWool® fleece filling (firmly fixed to prevent thermal bridges) provides further insulation.

Double-layer construction for more safety in case of holes

- The 8 cm thick sleeping mat consists of two separate, welded layers, each with its own valve. Each layer can be inflated independently, ensuring continued comfort even if one chamber is damaged. - An additional comfort feature: Each layer can be inflated separately, allowing the body to sink gently into the upper layer when less air is inflated. This prevents unwanted slipping off the mat. The lower chamber can be inflated more, preventing contact with the cold ground, even when turning over.
