What is WoodWool?
WoodWool is a material combination of wool and lyocell wood fibers.
The idea behind it is simple: Instead of relying on just a single fiber, materials are combined whose properties complement each other in everyday use.
Wool can absorb moisture, supports temperature regulation and helps to reduce the formation of unpleasant odors.
Lyocell is a wood-based cellulose fiber. It provides a pleasantly soft and smooth feel and complements the properties of merino wool.
In the WoodWool shirts from Grüezi bag®, both fibers are combined in a 50:50 ratio.

Why is merino wool combined with lyocell?
Pure merino wool has many properties that make it ideal for outdoor clothing. It can absorb moisture, promotes a balanced body climate, and reduces odor.
WoodWool combines merino wool with lyocell wood fibers.
The lyocell content ensures a soft and smooth feel and complements the properties of the wool. Especially with a shirt worn directly against the skin, the feel against the skin plays an important role.
WoodWool is therefore not an attempt to replace Merino wool.
The aim is to combine the properties of wool with the strengths of a wood-based cellulose fiber.

A classic merino shirt consists predominantly or entirely of merino wool.

WoodWool combines merino wool with a high proportion of lyocell.

Why Merino wool?
Merino wool has a special ability: it can absorb moisture and release it back into the environment.
This can help to keep the microclimate between body and clothing more balanced.
It's especially pleasant outdoors.
For example, it can get warm during the ascent while hiking. During a break, the exertion suddenly decreases. Wind, shade, or changing temperatures further alter how the body perceives the activity.

Why Lyocell wood fibers?
Lyocell is an industrially produced cellulose fiber whose raw material is wood.
We use Lyocell for the WoodWool shirts because the fiber has properties that complement Merino wool well.
It feels soft and smooth on the skin and contributes to the comfortable feel of WoodWool.
WoodWool Shirts use TENCEL™ Lyocell. The manufacturer, Lenzing, describes a closed-loop production process for TENCEL™ Lyocell in which more than 99,8% of the solvent used is recovered and reintroduced into the production cycle.
According to Lenzing, the wood used for TENCEL™ Lyocell comes from certified or controlled sources.
For us at WoodWool, however, one question is paramount:
How does the material feel and how does it perform outdoors?
And that's precisely where lyocell complements merino wool effectively.

How to properly care for WoodWool shirts
Wool requires slightly different care than a classic cotton shirt, but often does not need to be washed after every use.
Ventilate instead of washing immediately
After a hike or an active day, thorough airing out is often sufficient.
This is especially practical when traveling and reduces unnecessary washing cycles.
How to properly wash WoodWool
Wash WoodWool shirts at 30°C on the wool cycle .
Use a wool detergent without protease.
Avoid washing wool products together with garments that have open zippers, Velcro fasteners, hooks or other hard parts that could rub against the material.
Drying WoodWool properly
Carefully pull the damp shirt into shape and dry it lying flat in the air.
Do not wring out and do not put in the tumble dryer.
Take care with wet wool and friction
Particularly wet wool fibers are more sensitive to mechanical stress.
A very wet WoodWool shirt should therefore not be worn directly under abrasive backpack straps for extended periods of time.
Buckles, zippers, or other rough contact points can also put stress on the material if subjected to strong friction.
