Why am I cold in my sleeping bag?

The temperature specifications for sleeping bags are determined by a neutral institute determined uniformly for all manufacturers.

The decisive factor is the Comfort value, which indicates the lowest temperature at which it is still comfortable to sleep in a sleeping bag. However, even at this temperature, it can already get slightly chilly.

But why do we sometimes still feel cold? There are several reasons for this:

  • You are sick.
  • You haven't eaten enough.
  • You'll be cold when you get into your sleeping bag. A sleeping bag isn't a heater; it simply reflects body heat. Therefore, it's advisable to move around a bit before getting into it to warm up your body so the sleeping bag can better reflect the heat.
  • You use the wrong sleeping mat or sleeps on a non-insulating surface such as an air mattress, a camp bed, or a thin mat in a VW bus. In these cases, the cold can penetrate from below, since a sleeping bag only insulates from above. (The sleeping mat should therefore always have a higher insulation value than the sleeping bag.)
  • You come from a warmer to a colder country, which can increase the feeling of cold because the temperature difference is too great.

Our sleeping bags are slightly overfilled, making them warmer than the official ratings. This provides an extra buffer for greater comfort.
