SilkWool - the natural insulation for outdoor activities

SilkWool is a natural insulation with excellent temperature and moisture-regulating properties. It ensures a particularly comfortable wearing climate in both cool and warm temperatures.

Thanks to the extremely wide comfort range, clothing with SilkWool is ideal for movement-intensive activities.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Optimal body climate – even at higher temperatures
  • Wide range of applications: from mild to frosty conditions
  • Perfect for all high-intensity sports activities

Even during intense exercise, the skin remains pleasantly dry. SilkWool quickly wicks moisture away from the body while providing reliable insulation – even in colder temperatures.

Composition of SilkWool

The innovative insulation consists of 30% recycled silk, 50% alpine wool and 20% sugar starch.

  • Silk: Transports moisture particularly quickly from the inside of the jacket to the outside during active phases. Silk threads have tiny pores that can absorb and transport moisture away. When you sweat, the moisture is drawn away from the body and evaporates. The evaporation effect creates a pleasant cooling sensation, while the skin remains dry. This distinguishes silk from cotton, for example, which is less effective at wicking away moisture and therefore clings to the skin after strenuous activity.
  • Wool: Insulates during rest breaks and regulates temperature fluctuations like a natural air conditioner. Wool provides warmth even when damp. Wool also has antibacterial properties and neutralizes unpleasant odors.
  • Sugar starch acts as a binding agent and connects the two materials permanently and naturally.

Production of SilkWool

The silk is brushed together with the wool until an airy, lightweight fleece is created. To maintain loft, the fibers are sprayed with sugar starch, which fixes their 3D position. Sugar starch is robust and washable, ensuring the insulation lasts a long time.

  • Animal welfare: mulesing-free sheep wool from Europe
  • PFC-free impregnation: Water- and dirt-repellent impregnation based on renewable raw materials (Zelan™ R3)
  • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification for all materials used. This label for textiles tested for harmful substances guarantees that the product is harmless to health.
  • Recycled materials: Recycled silk from Italy, GRS-certified recycled nylon as outer and inner material

Feedback from the professional:

David Bruder, climber, mountain guide and alpinist (http://bergeweise.de):

"I wore this fine jacket on an alpine multi-pitch climb in the Rätikon at 2300-2800 meters. I wore a long-sleeved wool shirt underneath. The weather was sunny and mildly cold (pretty much in the single digits at 2500 meters), with a fresh autumnal morning, a gusty, cold wind at the top, and there was already snow on the ground. It does what it's supposed to: moderate insulation while regulating moisture. I didn't sweat too much while climbing, and it didn't get clammy while belaying. The outer fabric seems quite robust: no tears despite the very rough limestone. The cut suits me well; it's relatively close-fitting, long enough, and not baggy. The outside chest pocket is practical for my cell phone, but the front pockets are inaccessible with a harness, but you don't really want them to be. The hood is practical with a zipper, but it's not helmet-compatible. Apart from that, the jacket seems pretty good, even for the cool and cold season."

Peter Fresia, state-certified mountain and ski guide with extensive industry experience (https://www.alpinewelten.com/peter-fresia-bergfuehrer):

"I was able to test the jacket not only for everyday use, but also on two spring ski tours and several high-altitude tours in the Eastern Alps. The jacket proved its worth even in strong winds and temperatures as low as -12 degrees Celsius. The highest tour reached an elevation of 3.770 meters. As an active mountain guide, I usually place the highest demands on my equipment, in addition to technical details such as function, cut, and durability. And here your jacket shines with a unique feature. All my insulated jackets, whether made of wool or synthetic fiber, can't match the comfort offered by the silk and wool blend. This applies both during activity and as pure insulation in cold weather. Of course, the pack size is a compromise, but the detachable hood offers more versatility. I would adjust the sporty outfit with a few quilted seams, a bit of pep, and a size adjustment. However, even for me, that doesn't weigh heavily against the outstanding climate performance. I'm happy to recommend this jacket to my guests."

Feedback from practice

Elli Bräumann, outdoors and on the mountain almost every day - hiking, mountaineering, flying, climbing and also as part of the mountain rescue @elli.braeumann

"At first glance and touch, I would never have expected it to keep me so warm, considering it's apparently quite thin and lightweight. That was the biggest surprise. The outer material is simply incredibly comfortable to wear, and the cut – subjectively – is a great fit for me (although any jacket could almost be a bit longer for me, given my above-average torso length). The collar and hood are always important to me, as I'm really sensitive to drafts – I couldn't have asked for anything more there. The pockets also immediately caught my eye; I'm usually quite critical about their positioning and depth, but I was really happy with them too!

I'm generally one of those people who gives as honest feedback as possible and usually criticizes something, but I just can't find anything wrong with the jacket from a technical point of view. A small, albeit purely visual and therefore not necessarily essential, wish would be that the colors could be more vibrant and fresh; the gray combinations simply tend to look drab.

Walter R., a specialist instructor at an Upper Bavarian DAV section, is often outdoors in his free time.

"I myself am rather insensitive to temperature, which means I did not wear the jacket during a sporting activity, but on the following occasions:

  • For warmth at the summit in windy and cold weather. It's very comfortable to wear, simply layered over a shirt or midlayer, and provides good warmth even when wearing something damp.
  • In everyday life as a winter jacket in dry, cold weather
  • For example, after climbing in the hall to sit together afterwards and drive home

Since I didn't sweat into the jacket, I haven't washed it yet, but I've worn it at least 60 times. The climate: comfortable, dry, and warm.

The pockets are in the right place.

Regarding size: I'm 1,86 m tall and weigh 84 kg, and I'm fairly slim. I wear L, XL, and 52 depending on the cut. The jacket was tight, but not tight. The sleeves were tight when stretched out. The next size would definitely have been too big. I think I'm actually right between your sizes.

The jacket is super easy to pack; you can simply stuff it into your backpack. Its surface feels sturdy, so I wasn't worried about it getting damaged quickly.
