About Me

My name is Raphael. I'm a little over 30 and work in the alpine and survival fields, both professionally and privately. I grew up largely surrounded by nature, which has had a profound impact on me.

I like to share my knowledge and experiences with other people because I believe that many of these skills are among the most fundamental human competencies and that each of us should have a certain basic knowledge in this area.

Because of my connection to nature, something like sustainability is naturally important to me, so I strive to live my life accordingly and also choose my equipment with this in mind.

That’s why I stand for Grüezi Bag products.

TEST REPORT

On Monday, after a long day, we arrived at our first campsite at about 1600 meters around 10 p.m. The temperature was about -10 degrees Celsius, and a light easterly wind made it quite chilly. We had received motorized resupply that evening, so I took the opportunity to spend the night in one of the dome tents they had provided.

I quickly cleared a flat patch of snow to make room for the tent, and the tent was set up. I didn't care about any kind of anchoring, since we were moving on the next day anyway.
I set up my inflatable sleeping pad and quickly unpacked my sleeping bag. As with my last trips, it quickly expanded to its full capacity, which never ceases to amaze me. I quickly heated a liter of water in the gas stove, poured it into a drinking bottle, and placed it in the sleeping bag as a hot water bottle to warm it up nicely. I also added all the batteries and power banks, along with my toothpaste to defrost.

To my annoyance, another three hours passed before I could finally slip into the cozy sleeping bag. By then, of course, it was already perfectly warmed up, and I really enjoyed snuggling up inside.

The batteries were now warm enough to charge various electronic devices, and of course, I had a power bank ready to run the heater. I zipped it up and tightened the elastic bands until only a small part of my face was visible outside the sleeping bag. It was so cozy and warm that I was only woken up by the alarm clock, which is rare on such cold nights.

I didn't need the heater that night, but according to others, it was as low as -14 degrees Celsius. I have to admit, though, that I was basically cheating with the hot water bottle. Oh well, whatever.

What I'm really impressed with is the zipper, which is impossible to close incorrectly and cause it to get tangled. Another thing that really stands out is the material, which feels quite comfortable even on bare skin.

It doesn't feel like what you're used to from other sleeping bag models.
The wider cut is very useful if, like me, you are not broad but you take various things with you in your sleeping bag, such as a toiletry bag, headlamp or power bank.

I used the outer pocket, which I find quite practical, to store my earplugs. Often, there's not enough space to store various things where you can find them quickly, so this compartment is ideal.

At 06:00 the next day it was time to pack up and move on.

After a quick breakfast, we were already on our feet. We reached our destination around 14:00 PM at an altitude of around 2000 meters. At our chosen camp site, there was still over 3 meters of snow, which I immediately took advantage of to build myself some decent shelter.

I've now slept under the open sky for three nights, as no precipitation was forecast and there wasn't really any wind.

The weather was truly glorious throughout the week. Bright sunshine and daytime temperatures between 0 and -6 degrees Celsius.

In the following nights, I had to deal with temperatures as low as -16 degrees Celsius, and I usually take advantage of the option to heat my sleeping bag a bit in the morning. I have to say, this extra feature is simply amazing. You notice the difference immediately, and I noticed that the heating process doesn't draw much power from the power bank either.

The anti-slip nubs are a good idea, because who hasn't experienced the feeling of suddenly lying next to the U-mat in the night.

In retrospect, I noticed that I never felt hot when I first put them on, which is usually the case.

I also noticed that even though I was woken up several times during the night, I slept very well this week, which I attribute to the functionality of the sheep's wool.

What I've noticed a few times is that when you lie on your back in your sleeping bag and then move your hand to the left, you quickly feel the icy cold zipper.

The sealing lip at this point generally insulates very well, but it happened to me a few times that I somehow touched the zipper.

Maybe it should be mounted at the bottom, but what do I know.
What I definitely have to say is that this week the GrueziBag sleeping bag had to be compared to the Carinthia 1200, which of course sounds utopian, but I can say that most Carinthia sleepers also used a hot water bottle after the first night, so you can say that the good sleeping bag did quite well.

Some participants in this survival training course also admired it, especially because of the heating, and said they would definitely get one. 😊

Personally, it definitely won me over because it combines functionality, sustainability, and practicality. Furthermore, I think you shouldn't skimp on sleeping gear, as sleep is the time when the body regenerates, which significantly influences the further course of any activity.

I hope you are satisfied with the result of my test. I really enjoyed testing the sleeping bag and would be happy to test one of your products again.

Many thanks and best regards from Austria
