The right sleeping bag for the right purpose. We tested the Grüezi Bag Goas sleeping bag to see if it's suitable for our needs.

Anyone who delves even slightly into the world of sleeping bags will quickly encounter a plethora of different manufacturers and intended uses. Sleeping bags for camping. Sleeping bags for bivouacking. Sleeping bags for extreme temperatures. Some have synthetic filling, others down. And even within that category, there are countless differences in terms of insulation.

The outer material and functionality in terms of whether it can be coupled or not, pillow compartment, other compartments,… In short: the search for the right sleeping bag is almost a science in itself.

So how do you find the right sleeping bag? And doesn't one from a discount store do the trick?

There's no single answer to this question that applies to everyone. But it helps to think about what you need the sleeping bag for beforehand . Here's a short checklist that helped us.

We gave this a lot of thought beforehand , especially regarding the area of ​​application. And our old companions no longer really fit into this framework.

The area of ​​application of the sleeping bag

We have n't camped or bivouacked much in recent months . We're not your typical campers. It's been quite a while since we last spent the night on a summit . It's a difficult topic in itself , and one that's currently being hotly debated.

Since this year, we've been the proud owners of a VW campervan. Its name is Edgar. I'm a photographer, blogger , and I work extensively with tourism destinations. And we're passionate about the outdoors. Both professionally and personally, Edgar has given us the opportunity to , for example, drive to a via ferrata the day before , or even complete a section of a more distant tour in advance.

Thus, the intended use of the sleeping bag was quickly clear. And some features weren't quite as important to us. Weight, for example, played a minor role, as did packed size. The sleeping bag will primarily be transported in the vehicle . It should be suitable for a night in the vehicle as well as for a night under the stars, but not in extreme temperatures. The classic mummy shape is less suitable for our purposes . It would be nice if the sleeping bag could also function like a blanket in high temperatures , meaning it could be opened completely.

Sleeping comfort is paramount . Natural materials are preferred . And the positive feeling regarding the environmental impact shouldn't be overlooked either.

“I would have something”

I'd already used quite a few sleeping bags before. High-quality brand-name sleeping bags. Cheap ones from discount stores. And a synthetic monster that felt like it weighed 3 kilograms, but was rated for temperatures down to minus 30 degrees and below. That one, however, dates back to my scouting days and smells a bit musty from being stored in the basement for so long.

While searching for the right Edgar solution, I stumbled across Grüezi Bag . The manufacturer from Bad Feilnbach had already caught my attention at previous outdoor trade fairs with its innovative ideas and unique approach . However, if you're not specifically looking for a sleeping bag , you don't usually think about it.

Our interest was piqued by the press release announcing that Grüezi Bag had developed a new sleeping bag that can essentially compost itself within 200 days . So I arranged to meet Markus, the mastermind behind Grüezi Bag, at the OutDoor by ISPO trade fair in Munich.

What was truly impressive about this meeting and the overview of the vast array of sleeping bags wasn't the extremes, figures, data, facts, or the latest trends and innovations. I ca n't even assess or question many of those things because I lack the know-how and the technical resources . In those cases, I rely on the manufacturers' specifications. No. What was truly impressive about this meeting was the enthusiasm with which Markus described his products, his perspective, and his own approach.

And you can quickly tell whether someone is enthusiastic because the cash register is ringing, or whether they are enthusiastic and convinced of what they are doing.

At that time, Grüezi Bag was also looking for testers for their new sleeping bags. However, these would have been beyond our needs in terms of functionality and intended use . As mentioned before, it was all about Edgar. So I explained my situation, and Markus spontaneously said, "I have something else ." And so we arranged for him to test an older model: the Grüezi Bag Goas Comfort sleeping bag.

Why the Goas? This sleeping bag was designed for tents, cabins , and campervans . It can be used as both a sleeping bag and a blanket and is most comfortable in spring, summer, and autumn.

Its filling consists mostly of alpine wool and a small amount of synthetic down. Weighing approximately 1400 grams , it's less suitable for hiking or mountaineering . However, the alpine wool filling promises natural temperature regulation.

The blend of materials is designed to prevent the body, which constantly loses moisture , from cooling down during sleep . This can occur due to evaporative cooling , which happens when moisture is transported too quickly from the inside to the outside of the sleeping bag. Avoiding this evaporative cooling promotes restful sleep. The wool, sourced from sheep in the Alpine region , is also robust and natural. And wool retains its warmth even when damp.

All of these are facts that suited us perfectly.

Let me say it upfront: We searched for the Goas, found them , and found them to be perfectly fine.

The specialist magazine Klettern already confirmed in its 7/2017 test that the sleeping bag offers perfect climate comfort . Only the design was less convincing at the time. But what anyone could dislike about a ibex remains a mystery!
