But this very fact gave rise to a particular strength: the courage to break new ground with fresh ideas. With a great deal of creativity and a keen sense for trends, Markus Wiesböck developed exceptional, distinctive sleeping bags that consciously stood out from the ordinary.
They impressed with their excellent value for money, high quality and above all with one thing: genuine enjoyment of the product.
Thus, the first models quickly found their way into the market – laying the foundation for the company's success story.

Inspired by the structure of a spider web, he designed a novel chamber system that optimally distributes the down and ensures exceptional warmth. This is complemented by carefully selected materials – such as merino wool in the foot area, which provides additional comfort and a pleasant climate.
Driven by his vision of the perfect sleeping bag, "The Spider Down" remains to this day a symbol of the company's ambition: uncompromising quality, well-thought-out functionality and genuine passion for detail.

With the founding of Grüezi bag® “Wool inside” GmbH, the company philosophy was clearly defined: to develop sustainable sleeping bags that enable genuine, restful sleep.
Since then, the focus of every product has been on the individual. Crucial factors include carefully selected, breathable materials, perfectly coordinated insulation, a comfortable fit, and a balanced sleeping climate.
The goal is always the same: to create outdoor equipment that combines function, sustainability and maximum sleeping comfort.

The jury particularly praised the innovative combination of functionality, sustainability, and competitiveness. As one of the first sleeping bags with natural wool insulation, the Biopod Wool Zero set new standards in the outdoor industry.
It impressively demonstrates what Grüezi bag® stands for: forward-looking materials, sophisticated technology and the ambition to combine comfort and environmental awareness.

With a newly developed zipper design, Markus Wiesböck has once again improved sleeping comfort in detail. The special zipper routing allows the lower section to be opened precisely, so that the feet can be comfortably placed on the sleeping bag.
This ensures significantly better ventilation, finer temperature regulation and greater freedom of movement - especially on warmer nights or in changing conditions.
This solution once again demonstrates Grüezi bag®'s ambition: to noticeably improve the sleeping experience in nature through well-thought-out details.

The breakthrough: DownWool.
The road there was long and full of challenges – but Markus Wiesböck never gave up on his vision: to combine the lightness and warmth of down with the robustness and climate-regulating properties of wool. For many years, this goal seemed unattainable.
The two natural materials behaved too differently; a stable bond was considered virtually impossible. He repeatedly came close to abandoning the project – but his ambition to create the perfect insulation drove him on. Finally, he achieved the decisive breakthrough: DownWool. A unique, natural insulation that combines low weight with exceptional thermal performance, is resistant to moisture, and can be compressed to an extremely small size, all while providing a perfect sleeping climate.
To this day, DownWool is manufactured with great care and passion in Regensburg – and is a symbol of the innovative power of Grüezi bag®.

In 2017, Grüezi bag® received the prestigious Brand Award. This award is presented by the marketing industry publication absatzwirtschaft and the German Association of Marketing Clubs (BVMC) for outstanding achievements in brand management.
With this award, Grüezi bag® joins a list of renowned award winners such as BMW, Coca-Cola or Tesla – a significant milestone in the development of the still young brand.
The award recognizes the consistent brand strategy: natural materials, innovative technologies and a clear focus on genuine sleeping comfort.

In 2018, Markus Wiesböck faced a particular challenge: When people are severely chilled, even the best sleeping bag cannot warm them sufficiently at first. After all, a sleeping bag only retains body heat – it doesn't generate it.
The solution was an innovative preheating system for sleeping bags. It allows the sleeping bag to be heated before going to sleep, creating a pleasant feeling of warmth right from the start. Once the sleeping bag is warm, the temperature remains stable throughout the night.
In addition, Grüezi bag® developed the "Feet Heater" insert hip pack, which allows almost any sleeping bag to be retrofitted and heated. This solved another comfort problem in the outdoor sector in a practical way.

With the development of DownWool, Grüezi bag® sleeping bags have reached a completely new level of sleeping comfort, lightness and pack size in the temperature range from approximately −5 °C to over +20 °C.
However, extremely low temperatures revealed a physical challenge: the moisture produced during sleep condenses on the inside of the outer material in severe frost. This allows it to penetrate back into the insulation and impair its thermal performance.
To solve this problem, Markus Wiesböck developed DownWool Hybrid insulation. The wool is strategically placed where moisture is generated – directly on the inside of the outer material. It absorbs the moisture and transports it to the outside before it can reach the down.
The result is exceptionally robust, extremely warm sleeping bags with a stable, dry, and balanced sleeping climate – even under the most demanding conditions. The sleeping bag immediately won the coveted "Outstanding Outdoor Winner" award.

A trip to Scotland gave Markus Wiesböck a new idea. His battle with countless mosquitoes clearly showed him how bothersome conventional mosquito nets can be – especially when they lie directly on the face.
This led to an innovative solution: a dome-shaped 3D mosquito net that attaches directly to the head of the sleeping bag. This idea was finally launched with the "Wool Survival" model. The result: reliable protection from insects and creepy-crawlies, greater freedom of movement, and a significantly more comfortable sleeping experience in nature.

What had proven successful in sleeping bags should also set new standards in clothing: in 2022, Grüezi bag® launched its first insulated jackets.
Here, too, attention to detail was paramount. The innovative hybrid jackets feature different insulation zones made with natural materials: DownWool is used in particularly cold-sensitive areas, while temperature-regulating wool is used in the side zones.
The result is exceptionally lightweight, functional jackets with a natural feel against the skin. The lightest model weighs – depending on the size – as little as 230 grams: a warm, natural whisper of almost nothing that can be packed down small and taken anywhere.

Markus Wiesböck originally only wanted to develop a duvet for himself. In his attic apartment with its widely fluctuating temperatures – up to 27°C in summer, but only around 16°C in winter – he was looking for a solution with particularly high climate-regulating capabilities.
The result was a blanket that optimally regulates heat and ensures a pleasantly consistent sleeping climate. The response from those around the company was so overwhelming that it quickly became clear: this idea has the potential for much more.
Thus, the duvet eventually found its way into the Grüezi bag® product range – now available in various sizes and appreciated for its natural comfort and outstanding temperature regulation.

DownWool jackets offer excellent thermal performance – but a new challenge arose during high-intensity activities: How can insulation be developed that simultaneously provides warmth, is highly breathable and regulates moisture particularly quickly?
Once again, Markus Wiesböck found the answer in nature. With SilkWool, he created a new insulation made from recycled silk and wool. It combines lightness, high breathability, and exceptionally balanced temperature and moisture management.
This makes SilkWool ideal for active outdoor sports – and once again demonstrates Grüezi bag®'s innovative approach: intelligently rethinking natural materials.

Another great success followed in 2025: The Grüezi bag® DownWool Hybrid Ice Extreme was chosen as the best sleeping bag of the year by the renowned Outdoor Magazine.
The testers were particularly impressed by the exceptional thermal performance: Even at extreme temperatures down to about −26 °C, the sleeping bag offers reliable protection and a stable, comfortable sleeping climate.
The award once again underlines the innovative strength of Grüezi bag® and the ambition to provide maximum comfort even under the toughest conditions.

While traveling, Markus Wiesböck discovered that conventional sleeping mats often require a compromise: either they are inflated too much and feel hard – with the risk of slipping while sleeping – or they remain softer, but then offer too little protection from the cold ground.
He found the solution in a new, double-layered construction. In 2025, Grüezi bag® launched the first sleeping mat with two separate air chambers: A more stable, more heavily inflated lower chamber reliably protects against cold ground and pressure points, while a softer upper chamber ensures high sleeping comfort and reduces slippage.
An additional advantage: Should one chamber be damaged, the second remains functional – thus ensuring safety and comfort even under demanding conditions.

Besides its numerous advantages, the original DownWool technology had one minor drawback: it was slightly heavier than pure down. This problem has been solved with the new generation. DownWool 2.0 now boasts a significantly reduced weight, appealing even to discerning lightweight enthusiasts.
At the same time, its unique properties are retained: high resistance to moisture, excellent temperature regulation, and exceptional thermal performance. In high humidity, the wool even stands upright, further increasing its insulating capacity.
The result: natural insulation that is as light and compressible as down – yet significantly more robust in real-world use.

The team is particularly proud of the testers' verdict:
"Best climate, comfortable cut: I sleep better in no other model."
This award impressively confirms that Markus Wiesböck's long-standing philosophy has been successful: combining sleeping comfort, natural climate and well-thought-out functionality into a unique overall experience.

Measurable effect.
