Fabric customer
We use only ultralight yet robust materials for our sleeping bag covers and jackets, reducing unnecessary weight. But what is behind these names?
Nylon
- The outer and inner fabric is made of ultra-light, durable, and recycled nylon (100% polyamide), which feels incredibly soft, supple, and silky against the skin. This is achieved by pulling the fabric over hot rollers to tighten the pores. This makes the fabric down-proof and impermeable to clothes moths, yet remains naturally breathable without the usual plastic coating.
- The pores do not clog due to the bio-based BeSoDRY-ECO impregnation or the sustainable BEMACRON dyes.
- The outer material is therefore windproof and highly water-repellent.
We've already had several inquiries because the outer material seems so thin and fragile. Keys in my jacket pocket? Limestone rock while climbing? It's been through it all. And that brings us to the next question:
Why not ripstop material?
Many manufacturers save weight by using ripstop fabric as their outer fabric. Ripstop consists of thick threads interwoven with thin threads, making the overall fabric lighter. This composition is most likely familiar and visible in tents.
At Grüezi bag, we prefer solid fabrics because they're more durable. As soon as a ripstop outer material rubs against things like backpack straps, the thicker threads wear away, leaving the thinner threads exposed. This is highly likely to cause the fabric to fail.
Cotton
Skin-friendly cotton fabrics are used primarily in the glamping sector, where we prefer robust and highly breathable inner and outer materials:
Biopod DownWool Nature Comfort or Biopod DownWool Hybrid Cotton Comfort
Lightful DownWool Jackets
Like the sleeping bags, lightweight nylon materials are used here. Additionally, the shoulder panels and forearms are covered with extra-tough Cordura fabric to withstand greater wear and tear.
